In this episode, we see the introduction of a new race of elves, the taredhel, whom departed the world of Midkemia when ruled by Dragon Lords, the Valheru, during the Chaos Wars by a star bridge to a distant world. First among the servants of the Valheru, the taredhel’s magicians learnt to construct rifts, and populated many worlds with a highly sophisticated society, that, from their perspective, makes the Elves of Elvandar rustic in comparison. But disaster has been visited upon the taredhel by Demons of the Fifth Circle, when the hub world of the taredhel, where all rifts met on one world to provide ease of access between planets, was discovered by the Demons, providing them access to all the worlds populated by this race. From a population of many millions, the taredhel have battled the Demons, losing world after world until only tens of thousands remain on the last world, Andcardia, which is sorely beset and represents their last stand. Feist has an uncanny knack of introducing new characters in each series, that, whilst the reader is unsure how to perceive these characters at first, are quickly developed and become an integral part of the progression of events. In this title, Amirantha, a Warlock, and his offsider, Brandos, a warrior, make gold by summoning Demons and then banishing them in return for payment from local authorities, until it all goes wrong. A lack of knowledge about Demons by magicians at Stardock (including Pug himself) gives these two amusing characters a pivotal role in this title .
But as far as Pug is concerned, the dire prediction given to him by Ban-ath, that he must watch all his loved ones die before him, is an underlying thought that the reader should bear in mind with Rides a Dread Legion. I will say no more than that. One has to wonder how long Feist can remain in the world of Midkemia, and it would be a turn for the better in many ways, if he could utilise his incredible talent for writing to create another world, and a different series. No offense meant to die hard Feist fans (and I am certainly one), but I have felt some disappointment at recent releases in terms of the length and substance of the content. At 424 pages, I have read this book within a couple of days, and for those more time starved, I am sure you could stretch this out to a week, but at a RRP of $20.99, I feel these books are starting to be of questionable value for money, particularly in light of the fact that for a few dollars more, writers such as Steven Erikson are offering books around the 800-1000 page mark. Still, Feist writes brilliantly in this book, as with his others, and the reader, even if for a short period of time, is encapsulated in a brilliant piece of "unputdownable" writing.
I feel that $20.99 is probably too much for this, and so Fansci Books has 3 titles available at just $15.99. As a reader, this is a more comfortable price, and I hope you all enjoy the story, as much as the value.
